Pisa, Palazzo Blu
Few men have equaled Modigliani in embodying the romantic myth of the artist as a unconventional genius. “Modì”, the accursed artist who led a dissipated existence, the handsome dandy who had so many lovers, the misunderstood genius who consoled himself with wine and absinthe: a brief but intense, drammatic, and memorable life.
Everyone who posed for him said that being portrayed by Modigliani was like having their soul bared.
On display in the evocative rooms of Palazzo Blu in Pisa is a body of about 100 works, 70 of which come from the Centre Pompidou in Paris and more than 30 from the most important Italian and foreign public and private collections, in particular five extraordinary Modiglianis from the Musée de l’Orangerie in Paris, which agreed to lend all the works by the artist in the Jean Walter and Paul Guillaume collection. Promoted by the Ministero dei Beni e delle Attività Culturali e del Turismo through the Direzione Regionale per i Beni Culturali e Paesaggistici della Toscana in cooperation with the Direzione Generale della Valorizzazione del Patrimonio Culturale and the Soprintendenza per i Beni Architettonici, Paesaggistici, Storici, Artistici ed Etnoantropologici per le province di Pisa e Livorno, the Region of Tuscany, the Province of Pisa, the Municipality of Pisa, and the Municipality of Livorno, the exhibition is organized by the Fondazione Palazzo Blu, the Centre Pompidou, and MondoMostre and curated by Jean Michel Bouhours, an eminent Modigliani scholar and curator of the department of modern collections at the Centre Pompidou.
The exhibition recreates the cultural atmosphere which nourished the extraordinary and exciting experience of the painting of the era and Modigliani’s art from the period of his youth in Livorno to his move to Paris. The first section is dedicated to Modigliani in Italy, which tells his story from the beginning: his family, Livorno, his problems at school, the early onset of his illness, and his precocious vocation, as well as the difficulties he experienced in following the rules of the city’s Jewish community, all of which contributed not only to troubling his childhood, but the rest of his life as well.
In concurrence with the exhibition at Palazzo Blu, the Museo Nazionale di San Matteo is hosting “The False Modiglianis”, an exhibition curated by Paola Raffaella David, Soprintendente per i beni architettonici, paesaggistici, storici, artistici ed etnoantropologici per le province di Pisa e Livorno, and the Director of the Museo Nazionale di San Matteo, Dario Matteoni. The exhibition comprises three sculptures of heads erroneously attributed to Modigliani and represents a unique opportunity to see these famous fakes from close up.
