Botticelli is one of the greatest masters of the Italian Renaissance and in this work embodies the true character of its Florentine variety. He was an apprentice to Filippo Lippi before working in the workshop of Verrocchio, while his fame began after being called to Rome to paint the Sistine Chapel with some of the most famous artists of the time. Visitors in Santiago will be able to view the Madonna with child and six angles without paying a ticket. The painting is a late work by Botticelli. It was produced at a time when the artist’s style matured to reflect disturbed times in Florencre at the turn of the century, and represents a turning point in his style. It was composed as a tondo, but is different from earlier examples for its pyramid-like construction, for how the figures are lengthened and mostly for the presence of the instruments of Passion, which represent the focus of the painting and seem to evoke the inflammary sermons of Savonarola.
