The retrospective is curated by Alexander SC Rower and covers Alexander Calder’s (1898-1976) creative career. Calder was one of the most famous and respected sculptors of our time, with a career that spans much of the 20th century. The exhibition features his most important works, as well as some of his lesser-known research developments. The exhibition narrative starts from the artist’s early work with gouaches and wire sculptures, making its way through his work with bronze during the 1930s, up until his discovery of abstract art. The works on display are borrowed from some of the most important Calder collections in the world, both public and private. These include the Museum of Modern Art, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the National Gallery of Art in Washington and the Centre Pompidou in Paris.
