The exhibition curated by Claudia Cremonini and Flavio Fergonzi is the first time that the collections of Giorgio Franchetti senior and Giorgio Franchetti junior are shown alongside each other. The former (1865-1922) collected an exceptional selection of Italian and European old masters, including Mantegna, Tiziano, Van Dyck, Tintoretto and Guardi. He also purchased and restored the Ca’ d’Oro which he later donated to the Italian state along with his collection. His nephew and namesake Giorgio (1925-2006) was also a collector, and his collection of 20th century art is unparalleled in Italy. The selection of works in the exhibition include Balla, Festa, Schifano, De Dominicis and Cy Twombly. Much of Twombly’s early success is credited to Franchetti, whose sister the artist would marry. Visitors will be able to compare the two men’s taste, from ancient wonders to modern masterpieces, and their shared passion for discovery and innovation.
