FROM THE IMPRESSIONISTS TO PICASSO. MASTERPIECES FROM THE DETROIT INSTITUTE OF ARTS
September 25, 2015
April 10, 2016
The exhibition is curated by Salvador Salort-Pons and Stefano Zuffi and traces the history of European art at the turn of the 19th and 20th century. From Impressionism to Van Gogh and Cézanne, the Ecole de Paris and the avant-garde movements, from the abstract inventions of Kandinskij to Picasso’s exceptional career, the 52 works selected for the exhibition offer a rare opportunity to view the great masters that revolutionized Modern Art. The story of American art collecting, which developed in parallel to the rapid development of capitalism in the industrialized West, will also be illustrated. The visionary entrepreneurs who supported the arts introduced new ways of interpreting culture, fueled by the progress promoted by European avant-garde movements which in the early 20th-century were being collected and presented by the Detroit Institute of Arts.
