Days of exhibition

103

The largest exhibition devoted to Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio ever presented outside Europe, with 11 amongst the greatest masterpieces by the artist. These include the Supper at Emmaus, Bacchus, Boy with a Basket of Fruit, Boy Bitten by a Lizard and Narcisuss, on generous loan from some of the most important museums and collections in the world. Curators Rossella Vodret and Yusuke Kawase also selected 40 works by artists like Georges de La Tour, Orazio Gentileschi, Jusepe de Ribera, Simon Vouet and more, who were influenced by Caravaggio and the innovations he introduced. The exhibition also includes the recently discovered Magdalene in ecstasy, which art historian Mina Gregori attributes to the artist, and which is on view to the public for the first time. The exhibition narrative is organized in thematic sections: The Five Senses, The Fortune Teller, Light, Decapitations, The Virgin Mary and Saints, Still Life, Portraits and Ecce Homo. Rare original documents that shed insight into the artist’s private life are also on display.
