From the Jacques and Natasha Gelman Collection
Jacques Gelman and Natasha Zahalkaha became Mexican citizens in 1942 and built their fortunes in Mexico City as film producers. During those years they became close friends with Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera and began collecting their works (about 30 or so) as well as those of other Mexican artists such as María Izquierdo, David Alfaro Siqueiros, Rufino Tamayo, Ángel Zárraga.
The exhibition presents 156 works from their collection of paintings, sculpture, drawings photographs and films, as well as a significant selection of the artists' photographs by photographers such as Lola and Manuel Alvarez Bravo, Nickolas Muray and Patti Smith, reconstructing the view of Mexican artists and documenting the importance of that style, especially that of Frida Kahlo, which influencedthe fashion and costume of later eras as well.
