Denver Art Museum

Days of exhibition

From the Jacques and Natasha Gelman Collection

Jacques Gelman and Natasha Zahalkaha became Mexican citizens in 1942 and built their fortunes in Mexico City as film producers. In those years, they became close friends of Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera and began to collect their works (about thirty of them), as well as those of other Mexican artists such as María Izquierdo, David Alfaro Siqueiros, Rufino Tamayo, Ángel Zárraga. The exhibition presents 156 works from their collection of paintings, sculptures, drawings, photographs and films, as well as a significant selection of photographs by the artists of photographers such as Lola and Manuel Alvarez Bravo, Nickolas Muray and Patti Smith, who reconstruct the view of Mexican artists and document the importance of their style. Frida Kahlo’s style and dress, who still today influence fashion, will be presented through a selection of outfits.
