The exhibition features a selection of 250 works by the two great Masters of the “Floating World”: Katsushika Hokusai and Utagawa Hiroshige. The works on display are loans from the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, and were selected by curator Rossella Menegazzo with Sarah E. Thompson. The narrative is organized in thematic sections, and features the most important series by the two Masters. Hokusai stands out for his unusual personality and his ability to depict the places, faces, characters and beliefs of his time with power, drama and precision. Despite being more than twenty years younger than Hokusai, Hiroshige became a famous name in Ukiyoe painting shortly after publishing the Thirty-six views of Mount Fuji, which illustrated the great street that connected Edo (present day Tokyo) to Kyoto.
