Days of exhibition

The exhibition offers scholars and visitors the unique opportunity to view and study an extraordinary selection of paintings (nikuhitsu) on hanging scrolls (kakemono) and folding screens (byobu) by Hokusai, Hiroshige and other great masters of ukiyo-e of the Edo period (1603-1868), who have largely been associated with color woodblock prints. From early 18th century schools, such as Kaigetsudo (specialized in beauties), to the most popular schools which elevated the ukiyo-e genre to its greatest heights: the Utagawa school, with Hiroshige, Toyoharu, Kunisada, (1797-1858), the Kitagawa with Utamaro (1753-1806) and, of course, the eccentric Hokusai (1760-1849) followed by many students.
