Days of exhibition

Five works, five great masterpieces.

The three great masters of the Renaissance, in Cuneo for the first time, in the evocative surroundings of the Monumental Complex of San Francesco. This is a great journey through the splendour of sixteenth-century Venice – a cosmopolitan metropolis and a crossroads of peoples, languages and ideas, where Titian, Tintoretto and Veronese defined, through their art, the legendary culture of colour.

In the exhibition, it is precisely this aesthetic innovation of the Venetian take on colour that is considered in relation to the theme of the sacred story, where the five works, produced between 1560 and 1565, embody a perfect chronological and stylistic dialogue and engage with each other on the fundamental themes of Christian iconography: the Annunciation and the Incarnation, the Baptism of Christ, the Last Supper, the Crucifixion and the Resurrection.

Housed in a piece of mediaeval architecture that is now a national monument, the exhibition showcases a number of the greatest – and, indeed, largest – masterpieces owned by the Venetian Church, painted by the sublime artists who best represent it. The exhibition affords an opportunity to explore the role of these magnificent works in their Venetian context, giving the visitor all of the tools required to interpret them in relation to the period in which they were created, while also making it possible to glean a full understanding of the epoch-making significance of the artistic dialogue between Titian, Tintoretto and Veronese.

Presented by Fondazione CRC and Intesa Sanpaolo, and curated by Don Gianmatteo Caputo and Giovanni Carlo Federico Villa, the exhibition reveals the genius of three great artists who over the course of just five years demonstrated the principles of Venetian painting, at a time when it was capable of combining stylistic and cultural values with spiritual reasoning and motivations.
