Maximilian of Habsburg and the Egyptian collections between Trieste and Vienna

The Scuderie of the Castle of Miramare host the exhibition “A sphinix lures him. Maximilian of Habsburg and the Egyptian collections between Trieste and Vienna”, dedicated to the extraordinary Egyptian collection of Archduke Massimiliano d’Asburgo. One hundred and forty-three years after its transfer to Vienna, a significant part of this collection returns to Trieste thanks to the collaboration between the Museo storico di Miramare and the Kunsthistorisches Museum.

The exhibition brings together more than one hundred artefacts from the Egyptian and Near Eastern Collection of the Viennese museum, alongside works preserved at Miramare and loans from the Civico Museo d’Antichità J. J. Winckelmann. The display retraces the origins of the collection and highlights the deep connection between Maximilian’s interest in ancient Egypt and his personal and political life.

The exhibition is curated by Massimo Osanna, Christian Greco, Cäcilia Bischoff and Michaela Hüttner.
